Lo and behold
thou negligent and bewildered by passer!
Here you have
stumbled upon one community of an opponent association that has shook the unwary
people of the Republic of Turkey in 2001 and soon hopefully will shake all over
the world!
Here is NURİ
ALÇO REVIVAL ORGANIZATION! It is the path that all
socially-awares should take, the method which all seekers of
personal and social quality should follow and the mysterious civil
organization that all political and psychological abusers should fear!
But what
actually is N.A.R.O.? Who is Nuri Alço? Why is he revived? Is it a trust
fund formed for the veterans of 9/11 or a petty international civil-unrest
organization or a make believe thing in one of the better episodes of the
Simpsons? Here you’ll find the answer... and if you’re alert enough of
what’s taking place around you, you’ll probably be a part of it!
N.A.R.O. is Nuri
Alço Revival Organization! To fully understand what this name stands for
and what we aim, we have to start by Nuri Alço (pronounced nouree a-lch-o).
Nuri Alço
simply was one of the leading figures of the Turkish cinema in 1980’s. Since
the closing days of 70’s when he was first discovered until around 1990 he
acted in a lot of Turkish motion pictures in very sinister roles: he was always
the abuser, deceiver, the gang leader, the ruthless drug dealer boss, the rich
and powerful thirtysome handsome blonde guy with the colored silk shirt, open
collars, white socks... As an actor he was a quite gifted soul who was very
adopted to his look in the movies. The crowd were always sure the guy did make
his money with “unapproved” methods and he was so convincing that he was
hated as if his roles were for real! There were news in the papers at the time
how Nuri Alço was beaten in a street on the head by an old woman with her purse
(when he was simply walking by!) or how a lady, just introduced by his friends
to him, would come up to him and say whispering “You won’t put any sleeping
pills in my drink tonight, will you? Please don’t!”
The really
interesting part of the Nuri Alço saga nor is his talent neither the impact of
his movies. Actually, our organization in any way has no affiliation or personal
relationship with him. It’s simply that he was put up there on movies by the
producers and scenarists at the right spot at the right time! To fully
understand his place and importance we have to go back a little...
The first days
of 1980’s were not so sunny for Turkey. Unstoppabably growing political
unrest, heavy economical crisis going for the worse every day and terrorist
attacks within the country led the soldiers to decide on a coup d’etat
and martial law was declared after the military took the government over on 12th
September 1980. This situation caused an incredible withdrawal of public’s
freedom in almost all aspects of the daily life. The very democratic and free
spirited 1961 constitution was called off. Especially the left wing, who were
very well convinced that there would be a ‘revolution’, stuck in a very
dense dream-spoilt mood and contemplation. Anything with political content was
banned, there were endless street-bans, all leftist and far right-wing political
parties were put on halt, the ones that were decided to be out of law were
closed, politicians sent to exiles, thousands and thousands of young people who
were attendants of the far left and right wing political parties or similar
associations were sent to prison, almost each and every young male who haven’t
done their compulsary military duties were immediately sent to the military and
even a few hundreds who were a part of the terrorist crimes were judged and
executed. All this period lasted for about two years and a new constitution,
prepared and offered by the soldiers, was put into effect. At last, the daily
life began to get back to normal by 1982. This was the beginning of a new era
for Turkey!
Out of all
this struggle, pain and a very strong feeling of disbelief and unawarely hidden
(or shall we say “unwary”) nihilism, came a new period where the social
values turned around a completely different corner. The new interests in the
society were then carefully studied by the surviving politicians, artists, press
people and the like; they started to pull out plans to make social-political and economical advantages out of this
change...
The new and
so-called democratic elections in 1983 brought up a reign of a new party who
claimed to collect all four apart aspects of the political spectrum in one body
(they meant that the central right and left wing along with liberals and
communists should gather in one party). But in fact this was a clever trick by
this central right-winged/liberal crossover party. The trick worked as the
recent heavy-pressure days of the martial law had hurt a lot of people with
strong ideological beliefs and their thoughts were drowned out. There still were
left-wing social-democratic parties but the damage had been done and their
impact was now much weaker.
Enter the
infamous “the fairy-tale teller double-chinned yogi” prime minister and thus enters the new
period of endless consumerism, appreciation of hidden-swindling and richness
along with discouragement of all aspects that any logical and carefully studied
social politics can stand for. This is where there was noone to defend the poor
when they were getting poorer and there was again the poor
to appreciate the rich when they were getting richer! Also, this was
where Nuri Alço and his movies were starting to kick in!
All the moral
values that were built up and carefully reserved for years and years were thrown
away for the good sake of easy money, easy publicity and a life of
merry-go-happy liberalism where noone cared for democracy although seemed
to be asking for it. One part of the middle class went poorer and the other went
richer where none of them became nor working class neither bourgoise: None of
these dividents could not be explained what they were in any logical way
anymore! Especially the big cities’ residents no more believed that the work
and leisure rounded out with justice could be vitally principal values; they
were now clearly convinced that left wing expressions were a lot of
trouble indeed. But this was not just a ritual for a sacrifice of the left wing
ideologies. There were a lot of new investments done in the country for a period
of four years after 1983 and... that was it! We began to build our economy up
consistently on foreign capital and never-ending internal and external debts.
This also ended the growth of a possible real form of capitalism and
liberalism!
But alas, do
you think that we were alone? No! Especially for a newly flowering up country
like Turkey, integration with the outside world was a very important task and
all this coincided with those, now painfully remembered, days of Thatcher and
Reagan where even big old-time enemies like Russia were pulling in to bow for
foreign capital. The scheme was to try to get the new wheels of a global
capitalistic system fed with war industry and abuse of undeveloped countries.
Not just the third world states like Turkey was affected by this; it also
demolished a lot of things for the “aware” part of the Western World beyond
comprehension, by and large!
Back here, all
through 1980’s, Turkey met with the revolutionary economical new laws brought
in by the new government and everyone seemed to enjoy each and every aspects of
this new life: There were no more queues for the principal nourishes, especially
importing were couraged a lot, no more disqualified Turkish products, everywhere
started to sell imports of all kinds: cars, cosmetics, kitchenware, office
materials, bathroomware, clothing, nourishes, everything, and even fruits
and vegetable in a country where agriculture was the biggest occupation of the
whole population.
Television had
entered the Turkish life in 1968 but was massively popularised a decade later
especially after it went color in 1983. Cinemas were no longer enough for the
rural areas, there was now television over there too and seeing which
kind of colorful lives were happening outside their world which is inside their own country, a very big lot of the young the fool and the
uneducated migrated to the big cities, especially Istanbul. This migration which
started in the 70’s gained a new momentum and meaning in 80’s when the new
“rising” social values came over.
Nuri Alço was
now the prime evil of the new movies. His job in the films was to have the fool
young girls deceived, to get them into drugs, ‘taste’ their fresh flesh in
bed, sell their bodies and let them die a terrible death without any help when
his help is needed but he wasn’t there! Not just a terrible pimp of these poor
girls of course; he also played the successful businessman, the undefeatable
gang leader and all kinds of other bullshit role imaginable. A few other
experiments like acting in a pre-historic themed movie or a few that he was the
“good guy” are not much remembered. He was always known as the guy who never
believed the good will do good, the guy whose moral values were thrown
out of the window, did everything to look flash, never deigned to do the
“small” jobs himself and the most especially the guy who always died the
worst after all his struggle to get a top notch quality life. His movies much
more than featured him rather than the heroic starring actor who was the
good guy! This was quite a success for such an actor of a not-so-high calibre.
But just as we
said several paragraphs ago, N.A.R.O. does not have anything to do with Nuri Alço
or his terrifying roles. Nuri Alço, with all our respect to his real
personality, depicted the achingly changing, ignorant and capitalist thirsty
Turkey who turned its back on its recent history, lost its interest on moral
values such as common sense, logical thinking and self democracy. He epitomised
the whole content of the new era of the people in Turkish Republic: greedy,
forgetful, careless, ignorantly self-destructive, self abusive and almost fearing
to be self-conscious! The babies born when he was the star in 1980’s
are now teenagers and unfortunately a crushingly massive majority of them are
just like their parents and the present politicians. BUT!... This does NOT mean
ALL of them are ignorant!
N.A.R.O. is
here!... and here to stay! We are a group of young people living in Turkey who
has decided to do something to wake our people up from this ever lasting
nightmare... From the big cities it all seems perfect for Turkey: we are about
to start negotiations to enter the European Union, a happy and colorful life is
lived in big cities, there are still intelligent people with common sense around
and etc. But actually this country has suffered a hidden coup in 1997, turned
into a place where left and liberal politics had lost their sense to help cure
anything, a country which had two major economic crisis in a decade,
unemployment is at an all time high and people are in a serious unseen
depression. Someone has secretly put in sleeping pills in our
drink and it was just too late when we woke up. We were not clean any
more: we became Nuri Alço!... and someone has to remind this to
this blinded-by-capitalism nation.
Aware of all
this, we were in constant search of finding a symbol to start our activities and
two of the nucleus members, Gearte Olup and Gulyabani, found Nuri
Alço to be a perfect symbol for this, in a cool autumn night in September 2001.
They decided to write up Nuri Alço’s name on walls by sprays in the old
graffiti tradition but not working much to resemble artistic graffiti. It’s
simply because we are not gangsta rap hip-hop kids having some good ol’ fun.
We are trying to have our unwary and negligent people to remember their
past and to see clearly what they’re living now! So, the methods we are
carrying out is a mixture of yesterday and today. We don’t go flashy wall
graffities but simply paint up plainly in the tradition of the leftist wall
slogans of 1970’s.
At the very
start, we decided not to paint on any private walls; this was a case concerning
all the society and thus, even if we do have a lot to say and protest about the
corporate multi-national capital and local corporate institutions, our actions
should be pulled on public walls which literally belong to all of us! They are
to be plain, simple, easy to see and read! Our very first actions were set up to
see the reactions by the public because Nuri Alço was a distant memory from the
80’s: his movies were shown in the afternoon hours on TV’s but he had long
fulfilled his carreer and place in 1980’s and was not remembered that much at
all. Youngsters of age under 18 had no way of knowing him without someone
else’s guidance or coincidental bumps on the afternoon or noon TV.
First
reactions were recorded as being surprising glares, broad smiles, even laugs and
rarely, focused hating gazes! After the foundation in September we quickly set
out a site on the internet concerning our activities and aims. We put out our
first proclomations (which actually were very hardworkingly studied parodies of
the social and political stupidities and contradictions that we have been
living!) again in autumn 2001 and quickly set out to move on to work! Over the
years, the minds had gotten so dusty, many did not understand the proclomations
at all because of the complex form of the parodies we were displaying but there
were also people reading the lines with tongue-in-cheek and asking to join us!
We obstinately continued our actions day and night and decorated every
lonely looking broad wall of the Asian side of our great city Istanbul... Then,
the invasion of European side came and by then, just around the first days of
February 2002, all our work found its debut echo on the Turkish press first by
an internet news site, then on the major press! This was very quickly (actually
much quicker than we ever expected) followed by the major TV news and other
media sources. We were now the case of articles and special showcases where we
were shown as a petty criminal organization that was both to be feared and not
to be taken seriously. This was just the way we expected how the events would
take place! As we decided not to expose ourselves in any way, we watched
everything silently from one corner, only giving a few interviews only
through email to newspapers which we (at least) slightly trusted. Of course,
Nuri Alço himself was found over to express his ideas and he showed his
incredibly unclever face of his real character by saying “I don’t know what
these youngsters are up to; uh-oh, ah, they say “we’re into peace” so I
think they’re good fellas but I couldn’t get it why they’re doing this”.
He even was called on several major TV shows on one of which he was asked to
sing and our ears had one of the most terrible musical experiences (no pun
intended). However, all was not that bad: we also saw extremely well coverage by
some of the prime columnists who actually declared they literally would like to
join N.A.R.O.! (you can find many examples of our media exposure on the
related link including video sample extracts of the original news broadcasts!)
All this went
a storm approximately for a month and it was all quiet again. We also had a lot
of personal duties and responsibilities to fulfill so we delayed N.A.R.O.
activities for a calm before another storm!
After a busy
summer where we continued to decorate the southern parts of our beautiful
country, we are back with a complete renewal of our website and first time ever,
an English proclomation that you’re reading right now. We will be happy to
receive any kind of emails from you and other countries. We have actions pulled
in such states like France, Australia, Netherlands, Hungary, Czech Republic and
Germany so you are too welcome to express your feelings against political,
social, mediatic or artistic corruption by becoming one of us! However we have
some strict principals that all main members should work out for themselves
otherwise we will not accept any responsibility affiliated with your actions!
Do not
hesitate to contact us as well as not letting truth get far from your heart and
your eyes from the walls!
Everything to
be done for a much better world!
